Definition - Early Career

Berkeley Lab IDEA defines "early career" as someone with 0-10 years of professional experience in a particular field, regardless of the level of experience they may have cultivated in other/previous fields. This definition is age-agnostic and inclusive of career-switchers, recent graduates from different types of training programs, and individuals acquiring experience after receiving a terminal degree.

The Employee Resource Group is welcome to all who identify as Early Career or who are interested in supporting early career employees throughout the Lab.

Mission

The Berkeley Lab Early Career Employee Resource Group ("Early Career ERG") helps foster a community of inclusion and belonging for all Early Career employees at Berkeley Lab to support their professional growth and development. By partnering across the lab, we increase accountability to empower early career employees to achieve their fullest potential. The Early Career ERG (ECERG) priorities are to:

Vision

Our vision is to make Berkeley Lab the premier and preferred place of employment for Early Career individuals seeking to advance the scientific enterprise. We hope that these employees will not only succeed but thrive at Berkeley Lab while receiving the best career-launching experience before continuing on their career path.

Objectives

● Foster communication and mentorship between EC employees and middle- to late-career individuals

● Be a safe place for EC-centered questions and be a resource for answers

● Support and enhance the environment for EC employees

● Host EC-oriented events regularly

● Develop a community of EC employees

● Increase the visibility of the EC community through internal and external activities

● Advocate for improved policies that promote equity for EC employees

● Assist EC employees to navigate the career pathways at the lab – provide resources and promoting

transparency for professional development opportunities

● Bring awareness of EC issues and interests to institutional decision-makers and the Berkeley Lab
